Principal’s report 15th June:

Support Update:As a school we subsidise what the department provides for our students by:

· Mrs Crawford has been employed 2 days a week supporting students by providing enrichment activities in Literacy and Numeracy. This allows the class teacher to focus smaller class groups within their classes.

· Mr Oddy: one extra day and a half supporting students/teachers during maths and spelling groups — this allows smaller group sizes overall. This extra time also provides extra time for ESL students.

· Frances our teacher's aide is working on a one to one basis with about 16 students. The Literacy program includes revision of sight words, sounds, oral reading and comprehension.

Athletics Carnival will take place next Tuesday 22nd June, taking on a new format at Dunbar Oval. Thank you to parents that have said that they can assist any others that can help our please let Mark Oddy or Vanessa Roach know.

Parent Teacher Interviews take place in the last week of term most will occur on Wednesday 30th starting at 2pm - 7.30pm. Teachers will also add a few sessions at other times on the Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of that week before and after school.

School Reports will go home on 25th June.

I'm hoping that the school photos will arrive shortly. I have arranged for a different provider, The School Photographer, to talk briefly to you at the next P and C meeting about what they provide in the way of school photos. In this way you can compare what is provided to us by Pixi Photos and make a decision for next year.

The school is paying $30,000 over normal wages for extra teaching. The P&C is asked to keep up its financial support for this.

Questions: What is the BER completion date? Estimated 16th December, but there will be many procedures to carry out before handover and occupation of new School Hall. This will probably be at the end of the year beginning of next year. Other BER projects: Library painting will be done during the school holidays. Playground furniture is to be installed.

Are students doing gardening? Meadowbank Edible Garden (MEG) is currently being worked on by a number of class groups.

Canteen:Defective shutter in the canteen will not close properly without great effort. Apparently not adequately repaired. Jenni will investigate. Late lunch orders: students lodging lunch orders late will only be able to have sandwiches. Coming up: Fresh Fruit Day sponsored by Sydney Markets.

Fundraising report:

Market day 11th September. 25% of stalls booked so far.

60th Anniversary Celebrations:

Friday 15th October: At the school: Morning Tea Cupcake competition; Talks by past students/VIP/Captains/Principals; Lunchtime BBQ and party celebrations. Volunteers needed for morning tea and BBQ lunch.

Saturday 16th October: A change of venue has been decided upon, as it was realised that the school area was too difficult to organise. The Phoenix Room at Ryde RSL Club is envisaged as the new venue, containing Museum displaying memorabilia from the past 60 years. Souvenir Shop. Sharne Feilder volunteered to be Museum curator. Open times: 11.30am to 4pm.

A performance by Meadowbank students of songs from each decade from 1950 will be held upstairs in the Auditorium from 2pm to 3pm. The Night-time festivities for adults will take place in the Phoenix Room. Refreshments will be available from the bar at club prices. Volunteers are needed to assist in setting up and dismantling all these events.

Another fundraiser was discussed: “5 cent fortnight”. Students bring in all the 5c coins they can collect for a fortnight. This has raised over $1,000 at another school.

Orchestra: Orchestra needs to buy more instruments. They will put up a wish list for the Committee’s perusal.

General Business:

The Ryde Environment Education Network Meeting will be held at the Argyle Hall, Ryde on 16 June from 4.30-6.00pm. Geoff Hudson reported that the Network were putting up a Youth Environment Prize for term 3. Some practical initiatives coming from this Network were: The Rubbish-free Lunch Challenge, Waste Watchers and Leapfish.

It was resolved to send Barry Pecar, immediate past principal of Meadowbank, a retirement card.

Jenni reported that the Kindy Information Night went well but numbers were less than last year. The possibility of letterbox drops to new units and the possibility of translating our brochure or an advertisement to attract Korean students were discussed.

Jenny Klein raised the idea of repeating the Positive Parenting and Issue Management seminars, but it was felt that these events, while excellent in themselves, had not been well attended for the price.

Jenni Cope raised the possibility of the school putting on Parent Workshops on literacy and numeracy, with topics like “helping kids with their homework”

Meeting closed: 8.58pm Next meeting Tuesday 13th July.
